On the rarest of occasions, I get asked to shoot a wedding. Friends come to me and ask “I know you don’t normally do weddings… but, will you shoot ours?”. In most cases, I say yes but, I also explain that I won’t be the typical wedding photographer they might be looking for. Usually the response is “We don’t care, we love your work and we just want to work with you!” The conversation I had with Jessie and Crystal prior to their wedding was quite similar to that.
I feel I should also mention, It’s not that I don’t like weddings, I just know where my strengths are as a photographer and what I enjoy working with most. But, I love my friends and if I can help them in any way, I will. I understand that selecting a wedding photographer can be extremely difficult. They only have one chance to capture everything they need to. When it comes to working with friends on their special day, I get why they want to book with me. It’s about the already established connection with their photographer, it puts them at ease and the trust has been built over many years of knowing each other. I’d be asking a friend to shoot my wedding to, the day that happens!
I’ve been to a decent amount of weddings in my life and fortunately most of them have been fairly unique. The two weddings that come to mind are the first wedding I shot, which was a bit of a circus wedding and then there is Jessie & Crystal’s wedding. I’ve been a proud supporter of the LGBTQ+ community for quite sometime now and this was the first wedding I had been to as apart of the community and I have never had as much fun as I did on their day back in June. There was live music, drag performances, a cartoonist, and a hell of a lot of dancing. It also seemed like everyone in the room was a professionally trained dancer which I was totally envious of! I’m good for a few head nods and hip shakes and that is about it. Based on the vibe of the day/night, getting to work closely with Jessie & Crystal and after sorting through the images for a number of hours, I’m quite convinced these two beautiful women will be together for a lifetime. Their love is strong and you can definitely see the joy and passion in their eyes. This is why I became a photographer, to capture real expressions of humans and give them something they can enjoy for the rest of their lives.
I wish Crystal and Jessie all the best and a life time of love! And to everyone else, when you find this yourself, don’t take it for granted!
Here’s a small teaser of their wedding…
